Today we had the awesome opportunity to work with a medical team from Minnesota and missionaries Levys and Bonnie Hernandez. We traveled out to a small village in Masaya and set up a clinic in a local church. I, Kendra, was asked to translate and help in the vision station. The team had brought down hundreds of pairs of glasses to give away. However, none of the glasses were labeled with the appropriate prescription, and there was no way of figuring it out other than trial and error. Our first patient of the day came and not only did she have poor vision, but she hadn't been able to read in more than 8 years. We knew that she was going to need bifocals, and so we quickly separated the glasses and placed a bag of maybe 100 pairs of bifocals in front of her. Seem a little overwhelming? It was... at first. We were praying that God would touch her or that there would be a pair of glasses in this pile that would be the exact prescription that she needed. Pair after pair she tried them on and as she neared the end of the bag said "Oh, no, it is so blurry, how sad that you have all these wonderful glasses and none of them work for me." However, would you know that just 3 pairs from the end of the bag.....there they were. Glasses made just for her! She was able to see far and able to read perfectly, not to mention they fit her beautifully. She had tears in her eyes and said that she couldn't believe it. She hadn't been able to read in more than 8 years. She was so excited that she stayed in her chair and read verse after verse out load from the bible that we had there. She went on to say thank you to us for coming and being patient to allow her to search for HER glasses. She wanted me to thank the person that donated these glasses. Since I will probably never know who donated them, I figured I would share this story with all of you, our friends, and remind us that an old pair of glasses can be very valuable and a great blessing to others, especially in a place like Nicaragua.
Please keep our family in prayer as we will be gone for the weekend ministering with this medical team. Please pray for protection and that God will touch His people in a miraculous way.
