Tropical Virus

During our time here in Costa Rica we have quickly learned about E coli, parasites and tropical flues and viruses from personal experiences to one of the five of us at one time or another. Midsummer Kaleb (5) contracted an incredibly strong tropical virus. Poor little guy was sick for 7 days with a fever of 104. We were doing everything we could to get his fever down rotating Motrin and Tylenol. There are no bath tubs here in Central America and so we did our best to improvise and make a tub for Kaleb. We had been praying all week and had visited the Doctor, who told us that there was nothing to do but ride it out. Just as we were nearing the end of the virus his fever spiked to 105.1. I was sure the thermometer was broken. Those of you who know me well, can imagine how quickly I was in a cab to the nearest hospital. Come to find out Kaleb not only had a tropical virus, but also a parasite and strep throat. We quickly got antibiotics and were on our way to recovery.

The night we returned from the hospital, there was a team of woman here in Costa Rica from California working on the student housing here at our language school. While they were here in Costa Rica, they were also planning to have a kids crusade in English for our Missionary Kids who do not normally have that opportunity. The leader of the team was one of the most precious woman I have ever met, Robin Garvin, the Woman's Director for the Southern California District. She came with a team of women to serve and WOW they did! The Missionary kids had been looking forward to the crusade for weeks, and now our little Kaleb was not able to go because he was highly contagious. He cried his little eyes out because there was so much excitement amongst the kids for the crusade and he had to stay home.

The following day, after Kaleb had heard all about the night before from his big brother, we had a knock at our door. Robin had come to make a special visit to Kaleb, but she didn't come alone. She brought her 2 puppet friends. Robin is a gifted ventriloquist and joyfully came with her two friends to share some encouraging words with Kaleb and pray with him. It was the first smile we got out of him in 9 days. He felt so very special and will always remember Robin and her friends.
